Historical Background

Wayback Burgers began in 1991 as Jake's Hamburgers with a single restaurant in Newark, DE which still occupies its original location on Route 273. Home to the University of Delaware, Newark is also known for its automotive plants (little known fact: reggae icon Bob Marley worked in one) and Main St. shopping district. A simple, unassuming "burger joint," Jake's soon became several stores and home to one of the region's favorite burgers.
 
Jake’s Hamburgers had always served big, juicy hand-made burgers and real milkshakes, crafted to order by a friendly staff. Delivering the freshest, most delicious food possible was Jake’s only philosophy.
 
Fast forward 20 years: many fast-food chains are selling some version of a “premium” burger. Most of these are just larger versions of their frozen “hockey-puck” burgers, mass-produced and shucked at customers from under heat lamps. Celebrity chefs got in on the act too, selling overpriced burgers for $20 at their upper-crust burger boutiques.
 
None of this felt right to the people at Jake’s. Burger lovers deserve better than that, and Jake’s wanted to remind people that they can still get a better burger, made just the way they like it, in a warm and comfortable restaurant that feels like home. That’s how they did it way back when, and that’s what they still do today.
 
So, in August 2010, Jake’s Hamburgers changed their name to Jake’s Wayback Burgers. They still serve the best burgers under the bun.
 
Every month, Wayback Burgers features a brand new "Burger of the Month" and our "Shake of the Month." And, burgers are only the beginning: House-made potato chips, all beef hot dogs, marinated chicken sandwiches, turkey burgers, specialty sandwiches and even fresh salads are available as well.
 
Wayback Burgers even has a brand new restaurant design to go along with our new name. Our warm red barnboard interior with white and stainless steel accents are modeled after the great American roadside burger joint (think Rt. 66, back before there was such a thing as fast food). Go ahead-- put your elbows on our tables and enjoy your meal. You'll be glad you came.

At Wayback Burgers, our juicy, hot-off-the-griddle burgers are cooked to order and served fresh. Our signature house-made potato chips go perfectly with our thick, rich milkshakes. Monthly burger and shake specials keep things lively for our many repeat customers. Additional menu items include hot dogs, a variety of sandwiches, chicken fingers, and fresh salads.

Beginning six to 12 months before you open your doors, here's an outline of how it works:

Complete Your Application

Start the process today by   submit an application. A Wayback Burgers representative will review and respond to your submitted application.

Attend Discovery Day

Once Wayback Burgers and you have decided that there may be a good fit, attend one of our Discovery Days. During the Discovery Day, you will have the opportunity to explore the Wayback Burgers opportunity up close, sample the food, meet several of the company's key executives and receive a copy of our Franchise Disclosure Document. Discovery Days are held Fridays from 9am - 2pm at our company headquarters in Cheshire CT.

Sign Your Franchise Agreement

Upon mutual approval to move forward as a new Wayback Burgers store owner, you will sign a franchise agreement. We will then provide a list of recommended lenders to help fund your entrepreneurial dreams.

Secure Your Location

Finding a premier location for your store(s) is essential for success. With help from a member of our real estate team, an authorized broker or your designated regional Wayback Burgers representative, we help you identify the best location for your store and offer lease negotiation guidance.

Build & Outfit Your Store

With the help of your designated Wayback Burgers representative, the build-out process begins, including site plan and design specifications. Wayback Burgers works with industry leaders to design and build your store, ensuring that each location matches the established brand identity. Your Wayback Burgers representative will help you with all official construction documents, including mechanical, plumbing and electrical plans, and assist with any build-out/design questions you may have. Together, you'll make an on-site visit with your licensed contractor to review progress.

Train & Open Your Store

Our proven training process includes a structured program at our Connecticut headquarters, followed by in-store training at a location near you. Your grand opening kit includes banners, posters, balloons, menu flyers and loyalty cards. Each local store marketing manual includes specific examples of successful local store marketing initiatives that you can tailor as needed to your community.

Throughout the entire opening process you will be in constant contact with your designated Jake's representative. Together you’ll work through a checklist from the time you sign your franchise agreement to the time you open your doors to your first customers.   When you join the Wayback Burgers family, our committed team approach ensures that you will never be alone. All franchise owners receive initial and ongoing training, as well as support from your region's Director of Operations, the National Franchisee Advisory Council (NFAC), Marketing, Purchasing & Distribution (P&D) and Quality Service Control (QSC).

Director of Operations

Directors of Operations focus and work exclusively within their designated territories. They help with new store construction/facilitation, field training, and most any other support. They also perform QSC reports for their territory's stores.

National Franchisee Advisory Council (NFAC)

The NAFC, made up of franchise owners nationwide, helps all Wayback Burgers franchisees keep up with new developments in the marketplace. Regional activities are an important part of our continuing education program. This program helps keep you informed on a variety of subjects and provides an opportunity for you to interact with other franchisees and the Wayback Burgers management team.

Marketing

Your franchisee partnership with Wayback Burgers marketing begins with your initial training program. Each new franchisee meets with the team to understand the importance and process of a grand opening, analyzing the competition, local store marketing, etc. and that partnership is further developed once the new store opens. Throughout the year, you'll receive promotional kits featuring our national corporate initiatives to increase traffic/sales. You'll also receive operational builds, best practices and tips that will enhance your store's performance. The Marketing Team also creates all national print, radio and TV ads and provides those to the markets/co-ops. Since marketing initiatives are key to any successful business, our Wayback Burgers team is always available to help integrate national campaigns with your local store's plans and needs.

Purchasing & Supply Chain

The P&SC department works with the President, Field Operations, Research & Development and Advisory Committees to source, evaluate and secure competitive pricing for all existing and new products. The department also coordinates distribution channels for all products and negotiates distribution margins over landed cost for each product category to ensure competitive pricing for all available products for franchisees.

Quality Service Control (QSC)

To ensure that all Wayback Burgers are supporting the brand appropriately, Directors of Operations or other authorized representatives are required to visit their designated stores every 90 days for inspection. These thorough reviews of the premises and operations help confirm that our high standards, which have helped drive customer loyalty for 19 years, are being met
